Sunday Evening

My Benz was still parked in the garage leading to the Shadow Market, so I messaged Thane with my car’s location before suiting up. Besides the usual stash of hidden knives and guns, I also took the short sword I had nicknamed Lisa, because facing demons was the only time I ever took out the sword.

Like vampires, demons could be killed by decapitation, but they were much harder to catch. Unlike the bloodsuckers who were once mere humans, spawns of hell could use magic just as well as any well-trained witch or mage. The only “good” thing about demons was the fact that they didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the human realm because their magic drained fast aboveground and didn’t replenish quickly.

Kit had given me the weirdest look when she first met Lisa, but then I explained the name meant she-fox in Russian, the human language based on phoenix lore from days of old. Sneaky like a fox, no one expected that this wee blade could do the damage she did in the right hands—like mine.

Technically, demons weren’t a part of the Community, but the DEA still frowned on unnecessary killings. I would say self-defense counted as a necessary killing, which was why I didn’t include them in the number of people I had killed. They weren’t people, and they had a nasty habit of showing up during my contracts.

Anyway, I didn’t mean to neglect Lisa so much, but I preferred knives and guns for my regular jobs, both of which were easier to hide on busy Miami streets. In reality, cutting through obstacles with any blade wasn’t so difficult once I imbued the steel with my inner fire. Demon bones and muscles were nothing compared to that heat, but I liked to take Lisa for a spin every once in a while to keep her running smoothly.

After a quick flight over to the garage, I landed on the roof of a truck parked near my Benz. The reaper had beaten me there with his t-port device, no big surprise. He sighed and leaned against the passenger side of my bright red car, checking the time on his watch. I was sure it was some standard-issue reaper smartwatch, but from here, it just looked like a regular, old-fashioned analog.

Sun and flames, the man was hot. I felt like a broken record or a sex-driven teen with how often I noticed his appearance, but it was like death had enhanced his already-beautifully-defined features. Even in my current falcon form, my pulse quickened as I imagined what it would feel like to have him push me up against the parking garage wall. I’d wrap my legs around his waist, and—

Shit. I needed to stop that line of thought. Although priority number one after this mess was all cleaned up was to get laid and not with a fucking reaper. I could do better than that. Maybe not in looks, but, you know, alive.

I hopped to the ground behind the truck and shifted into my human shape.
